Join in Dumpling Quest 2010

Posted on January 07, 2010 by crankycheryl

I was feeling kind of crabby because I didn’t know about the 2010 Can Jam until too late to sign up.  So I thought about what I could do instead, and what I wanted to resolve to do in 2010, and it became clear.  No, not a parallel canning project or weight loss or thriftiness or patience or organization.  (Why?  Do you think I have needs in these areas?  Yeesh.)  No – this year is dedicated to consuming dumplings.

Are you a Burlington reader who wants to come along for tastings?  Are you a blogger who’d like to join in from wherever you are?  Read on and send me a note if you’d like to join in.

The Basics
  • Dumplings are the perfect food, and should be celebrated.
  • For the purposes of the Quest, dumplings should be understood to be those of the Asian variety.  Chinese siu mai, potstickers, Japanese gyoza, Tibetan momos, etc. are all good.  Though delicious, dumplings of the chicken-and- variety do not count.   A dumpling is some sort of filling wrapped inside some sort of starchy substance and boiled, steamed, or fried.
  • Should you join the Quest, the challenge is to:
  1. Eat dumplings from at least one local (local to you, that is) purveyor a month for the year.
  2. Attempt to secure and recreate the recipe at home.
  3. Document your dumplings by the last Friday of each month on a blog (or another way: see below) with photos, text, or both.  Please link back to this CrankyCakes post when you do.  I’ll blogroll and set up a Flickr account for all Questers so we can increase our dumpling experiences geometrically.

  • There is no particular monthly theme.
  • Can’t afford to go out and eat dumplings once a month?   No problem.  That’s when we can visit Farmer’s Markets and see if a vendor can share a smaller portion.  Or else research who’s making what locally (again – local to you) and see if they’ll share a recipe.
  • No blog?  That’s okay too.  Use your Facebook, Twitter, Flickr, Picasa or other means to spread the word of the goodness of dumplings.
  • On the 1st Wednesday of the month I will post a round-up.
